A fire broke out at the Fortune Town building on Ratchadaphisek Road on Sunday, leading to an evacuation of the building. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Jor Sor 100 traffic radio reported the fire at 4.25pm and several Twitter posts showed firefighters inside the building trying to douse the flames.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen said firefighters had succeeded in extinguishing the blaze, but smoke remained in the building. There were no reports of deaths or injuries, he said.

Forensic police and investigators will enter the premises to determine the cause of the fire when it was deemed safe to do so, he added.

Songtham Chimwaree, a firefighter from the Huay Kwang station, told Jor Sor 100 that he saw fire at a grilled food restaurant located on the basement of the building, with flames snaking up into its chimney hood.

Earlier, the Thai News Agency quoted witnesses as saying they heard a sound similar to the explosion of a cooking gas cylinder from a shop in the basement.

Fortune Town is a popular shopping destination for IT and electronics enthusiasts.
