Maharashtra: Major fire breaks out at Adharwadi dumping ground in Kalyan
Updated: 2020–02–01
KALYAN: A major fire broke out on the two sides of the Adharwadi dumping ground on Wednesday afternoon, releasing thick smoke up to one kilometre area of Kalyan (West) falling under the Thane district of Maharashtra.
This is 12th time in the last four years that the dumping ground has caught fire. The Kalyan fire officials said that on Wednesday at 12.30pm fire caught from two sides which later spread due to heavy wind.
Fire officials said that soon after getting information, two fire tenders were sent to the spot. As the blaze kept spreading, two more fire tenders were sent to control the fire.
Efforts were on to douse the fire.
The smoke of fire, meanwhile, has created panic among the locals, living in the surrounding areas, who have closed their doors.
The locals, for the last one decade, have been demanding the closure of the dumping ground, which has created health issues.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation had started operating the dumping ground in 1984. Around 650 metric tonnes of waste is dumped into it every day. The dump was filled to capacity years ago and the continued dumping has led to considerable pollution, especially for the last four years.
