Man held for setting woman on fire in Aurangabad

Updated: 20200206

AURANGABAD: A 40-year-old man has been arrested by Sillod police for forcefully entering the house of a woman and setting her on fire by pouring kerosene following an argument in Andhari village on Sunday night.

Hearing the woman’s cries for help, her daughter and son-in-law — who live nearby — rushed to her rescue and took her to Aurangabad’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where she is battling for life with over 70% burns, said police on Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as Santosh Mohite (40), was arrested and produced before a local court that remanded him in six-day police custody. Mokshada Patil, superintendent of police (Aurangabad rural), on Wednesday said police have gathered all the evidence and the seized material has been sent for chemical analysis (CA).

“Our Inquiry is complete and we are waiting for the CA report. Charge-sheet in this case will be filed within 15 to 20 days,” she said.

“One of the victim’s relatives said that the man was known to the victim and both were comfortable with each other. It is a serious crime and we have left no stone unturned to make a tight case against the culprit,” Patil added.

Meanwhile, police sources said that Mohite operates a bar in the village. “The complainant has stated that she was alone in the house when the suspect knocked at the door. As soon as she opened the door, the suspect entered the house. The woman objected to it and said visiting her at odd hours would bring her disrepute.”

The source added, “The suspect took offence to the victim’s statement and started assaulting her. He then threw kerosene at her and threw a match stick. The woman’s saree caught fire following which she started crying for help. Her daughter and son-in-law rushed to help and doused the flames before taking her to the hospital.”
