MP: Massive fire at Jaitpura power grid, 1.5 lakh consumers live in dark for 10 hours

Updated: 20200207

INDORE: Power supply to over 1.5 lakh consumers of rural and city’s north division was affected for more than 10 hours, when two transformers of power transmission company of 220KV Jaitpura Grid, burst on Friday morning.

This included around one lakh consumers of city’s north division and some 50,000 consumers of Dharampuri and Sanwer. Operations of around 100 industrial units of Bardari were also affected following the incident that took place at around 8.15am.

Two power transformers, including 160MVA and 40MVA, were completely destroyed in a massive fire, which broke out from a current transformer installed near these transformers.

The sound of the explosion was so loud that it created panic among locals of nearby villages including Dharampuri and Jaitpura. Thick smoke could be seen from about half-a-kilometre

We heard two explosions one after another in a gap of 10 minutes and the grid had caught fire when we reached the area. The power supply of our village went off immediately after the explosion, said Ajay Chouhan, a villager from Dharampuri

Supply from the grid was snapped immediately after the incident came to the notice of power transmission company employees, who later raised an alarm and called fire brigade.

It took about five hours for fire tenders to bring the situation under control as oil kept leaking from power transformers. DharampuriDhaturiaAswayaHatuniaTaranaBarlai and nearby areas were the worst affected. In the city’s north circle, supply to Sanwer Road, Aurbindo Hospital, Jaitpura industrial belt and Sukhlia areas had a major impact.

Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company Limited (MPPKVVCL) managing director Vikas Narwal claimed that the situation was brought under control within five hours after the incident and supply to 90 per cent of the affected feeders was restored before sunset.

We had our team of some 10 engineers and 50, who were engaged to ensure alternative arrangements to restore supply. Supply to most of the affected areas was restored till 6pm, Narwal told TOI.

We aim to restore supply from the affected grid by Saturday evening. Till then supply to connected areas could be affected for short intervals, he added.

The incident has also prompted state energy minister Priyavrat Singh to order an inquiry into the incident. An inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact reason behind the fault, the minister stated in an official note.
