Ahmedabad: 4 dead in blaze at textile unit near Pirana

Updated: 20200209

AHMEDABAD: At least four persons were reported dead in a major fire at a textile unit on Narol-Pirana Road on Saturday evening. A total of 19 vehicles from Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) were pressed into operation as the blaze continued in the unit.

AFES officials said they received a call at 5.48pm reporting a major blaze in the premises of Nandan Denim Ltd on Narol-Pirana Road. “Based on the initial report, initially 12 vehicles were dispatched to the spot. After assessing the severity, seven more were called from nearby fire stations. In all, there were two snorkels, five multi-purpose vehicles and eight tankers among other vehicles, said a senior AFES official.

Officials said that the ground floor and first floor of the denim production unit were spread across a length of 200 feet. “The discovery of the bodies took time as the unit officials failed to intimate us about potential trapping of workers inside. The interiors suggested that there were only two major exit points, making it difficult for the staff members to make a dash,” said an AFES official. “In total, 10 persons were reported to be trapped inside, the search for others is on.” Nearby residents also rushed to the spot after news of persons trapped in the fire spread in the area. Relatives of the workers also gheraoed the management over the deaths. AFES officials said that the bodies are completely charred and are kept in the same spot. “It’s difficult to ascertain age, gender or any other features. It is likely that the only way they can be identified would be to take the overall stock of the workers in the shift,” said the official. “They would not have got any time to escape.”

A senior executive from Nandan Denim Ltd told TOI that they are yet to ascertain the starting point of the blaze and extent of damage. “The incident primarily affected the shirting division of the premises. We are cooperating with the AFES,” said the official.

“At 10.15pm, most of the area was under control, but there were still embers in several places due to flame from fire in the stock. Thus, it’s likely that some vehicles would be deployed throughout the night,” said an official.
