KOLKATA: A fire broke out in a plywood godown-cum-shop in Taltata off SN Banerjee Road, opposite Taltala Bazar in Kolkata on Monday night.
Even as no loss of life was reported, 15 fire tenders were pressed into action as the godown is located in a densely populated neighbourhood. Occupants of the residential building next to the godown had to be evacuated as the flames leapt to the building as well.
According to locals, they noticed smoke bellowing out of the three-storey building a little after 9pm. They informed the fire brigade headquarters and the local police station immediately. Fire fighters from Free School Street, which is barely two kilometres away, rushed within minutes with nine fire tenders.
But as the flames kept leaping to the next building, six more fire tenders were pressed into action. Pathologist Subir Dutta who is in his 90s and his younger brother Samir Dutta, an octogenarian, had to be rescued as the fire spread to the adjacent building where the Duttas reside. The back portion of the building serves as a pathology lab run by the Duttas.
