Updated: 2020–02–11
MADURAI: A 40-year-old man from Karadikkal village near Thirumangalam was killed when petrol and diesel stocked in a shed illegally went up in flames on Monday. Four more people suffered injuries and were shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH).
The deceased was identified as P Ganesan. R Vijayakumar, 38, from Karadikkal, A Karthick, 26, from Kappalur and M Asaithambi, 50, from Karadikkal suffered grievous injuries while V Arumugam, 66, suffered minor injury.
The incident took place at around 12.30pm in a temporary shed belonging to Asaithambi near the Indian Oil Corporation Limited terminal.
The victims were playing carrom board inside the shed when all of a sudden, the fuel stored in containers went up in flames. Ganesan was charred to death on the spot. The inflammable substances were kept in the shed illegally, without any safety measures in place. An inquiry was underway to ascertain the cause of fire, a police officer said.
“Source of the inflammable products is also under investigation. It is suspected that petrol and diesel were pilfered from oil tankers and stored there to be sold in loose,” he added.
Four fire tenders from Thirupparankundram and Thirumangalam were swung into action. The fire was put off after 30 minutes. A case was registered with the Thirumangalam Town police station and a detailed inquiry was carried out.
