Workshop fire: No assurance to car owners on repairs yet

KOLKATA: Owners of cars that were gutted in the workshop fire off EM Bypass on Thursday remained on tenterhooks a day later with the automobile dealer expressing inability to provide any assurance till the damage had been assessed by insurance surveyors.
Though officials of One Auto — the dealer principal of Maruti Suzuki whose workshop went up in flames — said they had intimated National Insurance about the incident, no official from the insurance firm has surveyed the damage yet.
“It is only after our insurance firm gives a report that we can proceed with the survey of cars by firms they were insured with. Any assurance on repair or replacement will be provided to the owners thereafter,” said an official. He, though, acknowledged that since the vehicles were in the workshop’s custody at the time of the fire, the onus of the damage lies with the management and not car owners.
The vehicle owners, while being assured that the cars they get would be road-worthy, have not been provided with a timeline.
