Uttar Pradesh: Smoke from fire in godown kills 3-year-old
Updated: 2020–03–23
BAREILLY: A three-year-old girl died and her 27-year-old aunt was rendered unconsciousness after they inhaled smoke billowing out of the floor below. The two were trapped in the room when a fire broke out in a godown in the basement of the house in Quila area of Bareilly district on Sunday night.
Godown owner Aftab sold grass padding for air coolers and, therefore, had stored large quantity of grass in the basement of his house. On Sunday night, the dry grass in the godown caught fire. His wife, Shahana, and niece, Falak, were sleeping in the room when the fire broke out. The child died of asphyxiation while her aunt fell unconscious.
The fire was doused by firefighters, who prevented it from spreading in the neighbourhood. Both victims were rushed to hospital where Falak died while undergoing treatment. Shahana had not regained consciousness at the time of filing the report.
Manoj Kumar, SHO of Quila police station, told TOI, “The fire was doused soon by fightfighers and we provided them required support from our end. The three-year-old girl died after inhaling smoke but her aunt was saved. We may file a complaint against the godown owner for showing negligence and putting neighbours’ lives in danger.”
