Updated: 2012-08-07-15:33
MELAKA, Aug 7 (Bernama) — A century old cinema turned emporium in Jalan Kee Ann Bunga Raya, here, was destroyed in a fire last night.
The fire also destroyed 10 fruit stalls and two food stalls which were located outside the single storey building.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operation) Lokman Hakim Sulaiman said the department received a distress call at 11.58pm and arrived at the scene six minutes later with 47 firemen and eight fire engines from Ayer Keroh, Bukit Katil and Jalan Kubu.
“When firemen arrived at the scene, the fire was at its peak while a cracked wall also collapsed due to the strong heat,” he told reporters at the scene.
He said firemen using water from the Melaka river and a hydrant nearby, brought the fire under control at 1.26am while the cause of the fire was being investigated.
