The family had just moved into the house three weeks ago.

Nina AKP Zaman, 41, said that her husband, Ahmad Lufti bin Salim, 43, was awoken when the electricity went out. It was her husband who first noticed that the car in the garage was on fire.

The family has been in the country for the past one-and-a-half years. The head of the household is working for an international company here.

After receiving a distress call at 1.18am, the Fire & Rescue Department dispatched seven personnel in two fire engines to the scene.

Led by Assistant Officer Awg Serkawi bin Haji Bakar, the Fire & Rescue personnel were able to get the situation under control in 10 minutes.

The fire was extinguished about two hours later.

Meanwhile, a family of 12 who lives in a one-storey house at Simpang 372, Jalan Singa Menteri, escaped unharmed after their vehicle also mysteriously caught fire at about 1.15am.

Awg Hj Mejdee bin Hj Ibrahim, 52, and his wife, Dk Suraidah binti Pg Hj Sulaiman, 49, said the fire occurred when they were sleeping. Fortunately, one of their children who had just finished Sahur woke up everyone after noticing the fire. They were unable to save their important documents and other valuables for fear that explosions would occur as a result of the fire. Five vehicles and a scooter that were parked in the garage were damaged by the fire. The fire victims are currently residing with their in-laws next door.

The Fire & Rescue Department dispatched 12 personnel to the scene. Led by Deputy Officer Awg Hj Sulaiman bin Hj Yusof, they were able to contain the fire in less than 45 minutes. Personnel from the BSP Panaga Fire Department also assisted them.

Meanwhile, at around noon yesterday, a man escaped unscathed after his house at Lot 5437, Jalan Maulana in Kuala Belait, caught fire. It is believed that the cause of the fire was a faulty air-conditioner.

Kuala Belait Fire & Rescue Department dispatched 10 personnel, who were led by Deputy Officer Awg Musa bin Hj Yusof, in three fire-trucks. Also at the scene was Commanding Officer Operation ‘B’ Awg Abd Azis bin Hj Mohammad and Assistant Superintendent Awg Zulkeflee bin Ali Mas.
