Residents express frustration with firemen at Parola Compound fire
Updated: 2021–02–21
Several residents grew angry with firefighters during the deadly fire at the Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila.
According to Katrina Son’s report on “24 Oras Weekend,” residents complained that the firemen were just watching their houses burn to the ground.
“Kanina nakapaikot ang bumbero pinanood at nag-video sila,” a resident claimed.
“Hinintay pa nila lumaki ‘yong apoy bago sila naglabas ng tubig,” another resident added.
Some residents also said the firefighters did not have enough water.
“Napakaraming bumbero, wala silang tubig. Anong gagawin namin? Sunugin na nila pati metro ng Maynilad para wala na kami bayaran,” a resident said.
Meanwhile, Fire Inspector Gaudencio Magallanes said there were reports of residents grabbing hoses from firemen.
“Unfortunately, mayroon talagang nanggugulo, nanakot. Mayroon pang balita na may nasaksak pero ‘di pa natin na-confirm ang nangyari kung talagang nasaksak,” Gaudencio said.
Five people died during the fire that engulfed a residential area at the Parola Compound.
The fire was said to have started at 11:53 p.m. Saturday in the house of a certain Jake Loyola.
Firemen had difficulty putting out the fire due to the narrow alleys leading to the compound and the strong winds which fanned the flames.
The fire raged for six hours but was finally controlled at 5:04 a.m. then put out at 6:11 a.m.
