Fire in Dimapur, 3 oil tankers explode
Updated: 2013-08-11-12:23

DIMAPUR: A major fire broke out on Friday evening at an oil tanker ‘garage’ near Essar petrol pump at 7th mile in Dimapur. The impact of the fire was so huge that three oil tankers exploded in the inferno, spreading the fire to other parked vehicles and also snapping off high-tension electric wires.

While police and the district administration are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire, it is suspected that a petrol adulteration racket was being carried out and some people were allegedly filling oil from the tankers, a source said. The three tankers which exploded were out of the six oil tankers bound for Manipur.

Several fire tenders from Nagaland Fire Service and Form Type Fire Tender from the Airports Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation were pressed into service to douse the flames.

Panic gripped people residing in the 7th Mile area as the fire spread to the godown.

Police and IRB personnel blocked the highway and stopped vehicles from plying for nearly 2 hours to avoid any untoward incident. It has been estimated that about 12,000-20,000 litres of oil was destroyed in the fire, a source said.

Chaos and traffic jams created problems along the highway as police personnel had a harrowing time to control the situation.
