Fire in Textile market creates panic

SURAT: A fire due to short circuit in basement of Hari ohm market located on Ring road created a panic on Saturday late evening in the city. However a huge contingent of fire officials with fire fighting equipment controlled fire after fire fighting of 45 minutes.
Officials of fire department said that fire erupted in a garment shop located in basement of the market at around 7.30 pm . Following the fire large amount of smoke filled the whole of basement area making breathing difficult for people. A team of 50 officials with 8 water tankers and 5 fire fighters rushed to the spot. After 45 minutes of fire fighting the fire was doused .
” Due to this fire nearly 769 shops located in the Hari ohm market were also affected as smoke had engulfed every thing and fire officials had to wear breathing masks while dousing the fire.” Said Pankaj Patel, Chief Fire officer , Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) .” We have issued the notice to the owner of the shop and market developers as they did not have fire safety equipments as per norms .” he added.
However , no loss of life was reported in the incident.
