At least four people died after a ferry carrying 197 passengers caught fire and sank in Nasik Strait, about seven kilometers from Tanjung Pandan, Belitung Island, on Thursday evening.
National Police analysis and evaluation division chief, Sr. Comr. Rusli Hendyaman, said on Friday that a joint rescue team had rescued 180 people and was still searching for the remaining 13 passengers.
“The team, consisting of Bangka Belitung Water Police, the Navy and local fishermen, is still combing the area to locate and rescue the missing victims,” he said at National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
Rusli said that the dead were identified as Zubir, 73, Huzaida, 49, Ipah Nurhasanah, 37, and a two-year-old child named Fani.
