LUCKNOW: A newborn and two women died after the ambulance carrying them caught fire on meeting an accident. The lady who had delivered the child just before the accident is undergoing treatment at KGMU’s trauma centre and remained ‘under observation’. The incident took place around 3am on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday at Kothi area in Barabanki district.
According to police, the driver of the 108 Samajwadi Swasthya Seva ambulance Santosh Kumar, who too suffered several injuries, received an SOS call around 2am. He went to pick up a pregnant woman identified as Gudia from her village Manodharpasin Purwa located in Lonikatra area.
“Gudia’s complications had increased in the night and her mother-in-law Shyama Devi and sister-in-law Somvati decided to take her to the nearest community healthcare centre,” said Umesh Kumar, in charge of Kothi police station. On way to the hospital, Gudia delivered the baby. The ambulance driver lost control while negotiating an oncoming truck near Mubarakpur village in Kothi area. The ambulance skidded off the road and collided with a tree and turned 90 degrees.
Moments later the ambulance caught fire. While Gudia was somehow brought out from the ambulance by those who gathered in the area her baby and two relatives could not be rescued immediately and died in the incident. Ministhy S, Barabanki district magistrate said best medical care was being doled out to the injured victim.
