Updated: 2012-09-27-17:35
GEORGE TOWN, Sept 27 (Bernama) — About 5,000 residents and business outlets in Air Itam suffered a power outage when the Paya Terubong Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Main Intake Sub-station was damaged by fire today.
Penang TNB general manager S. Mohandass said the fire destroyed the switches and cables in the sub-station at 11.50am.
Among affected areas, he said, were Air Itam, Kampung Baru, Jalan Thein Teik, Padang Tembak and Farlim.
“As of 2.15pm, power has resumed to about 75 percent of the affected areas while the remaining areas are expected to be receive power supply by 4pm,” he told Bernama when contacted.
He said the fire today was the second involving the sub-station as the first fire in March incurred losses amounting to RM3.5 million since 14 switchgears were damaged and needed to be replaced.
Meanwhile, Paya Terubong Fire and Rescue Station chief J. Ambrasan said the fire was brought under control an hour after the department received a distress call from public about the fire at 11.54am.
“Investigations are going on to determine the cause of the fire and estimated damages,” he said.
