Boat gutted by fire in Papua

The Papua Baru passenger boat was set ablaze while docking at Porasko Harbor, Jayapura. The fire is suspected to have originated from an abandoned cooking stove that was still on in the ferry’s kitchen.
The Jayapura fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire in no time. As many as seven of the boat’s crew members were summoned by the Jayapura City Police for questioning.
“We need to find out what exactly happened before the fire, including the roles of the crew,” Papua police spokesman Sr. Comr. I Gede Sumertha Jaya said on Wednesday.
The boat, purchased in 2008 and worth Rp 42 billion, belongs to the provincial administration. The 63-meter-long and 12-meter-wide ferry is able to accommodate 350 people. (dic)
