Fire razes eight houses, kills four in Pejagalan

A family of four died in a fire that razed eight houses in a slum in Pejagalan, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Head of the North Jakarta fire fighting and natural disaster management office Nurdin Silalahi said the family members died after becoming trapped in a flash fire that razed their shop house.
“Until this morning, only three corpses of the four dead victims had been found. They have already been sent to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for autopsy,” he said. The three bodies were identified as Nge Mai How, 31, Herman Wijaya, 23, and Bela Melinda, 16.
“A search and rescue team is still searching for the body of 55-year-old mother Ngong Chongliang,” he said. The four couldn’t escape the inferno because iron bars covered their house’s windows.
The fire was believed to be caused by a power short circuit on the first floor. The fire torched a car and store goods before quickly spreading to six other houses. A total of 25 fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the blaze.
