HAI DUONG (VNS)— A four-storey trade centre in northern Hai Duong Province that caught fire last Saturday is likely to collapse, warned Le Quang Hung, director of the State Authority for Construction Quality.
After visiting the site last Sunday, he reported that the structure of the building was seriously damaged, with the back having completely collapsed. If the whole building fell, surrounding buildings might be damaged. For this reason, provincial authorities plan to demolish the building and construct a contemporary market.
The case also revealed serious shortcomings in firefighting and prevention. Head of the provincial Police’s Fire Fighting and Prevention Office Nguyen Danh Thuy told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the trading centre failed to meet fire regulations.
The automatic fire alarm system had been broken since 2004, three years after it went into operation, he said, and half of the water pumps were out of order. — VNS
